چکیده

We present a statistical study of optical warps in a sample of 540 galaxies, about five times larger than previous samples. About 40% of all late-type galaxies reveal S-shaped warping of their planes in the outer parts. Given the geometrical parameters and detection sensitivity, this result suggests that at least half of all galaxy disks might be warped. We demonstrate through geometrical simulations that some apparent warps could be due to spiral arms in a highly inclined galaxy. The simulations of non warped galaxies give an amount of false warps of ≈ 15%, while simulations of warped galaxies suggest that no more than 20% of the warps are missed. We find a strong positive correlation of observed warps with environment, suggesting that tidal interaction have a large influence in creating or re-enforcing warped deformations.

A Unified Picture of Disk Galaxies Where Bars, Spirals and Warps Result from the Same Fundamental Causes

Bars and spiral arms have played an important role as constraints on the dynamics and on the distribution of dark matter in the optical parts of disk galaxies. Dynamics linked to the dissipative nature of gas, and its transformation into stars provide clues that spiral galaxies are driven by dissipation close to a state of marginal stability with respect to the dynamics in the galaxy plane. Her...

A New Scenario for the Origin of Galactic Warps

Galactic warps represent an old unresolved problem, since the discovery, at the end of the fifties, of the HI warp of the Milky Way. In this paper, we propose a new scenario explaining a large fraction of the observed optical warps. Based on N-body simulations, we show that realistic galactic disks, where the dark matter is essentially distributed in a disk, are subject to bending instabilities...

Bending instabilities at the origin of persistent warps : a new constraint on dark matter halos

A substantial fraction of the warps in spiral galaxies may result from bending instabilities if the disks are essentially self-gravitating. With N-body simulations, we show that galaxies with self-gravitating disks as thick as HI disks are subject to bending instabilities generating S-shaped, U-shaped or asymmetric warps. S-shaped warps persist during several rotations and keep the line of node...

Propagation of warps in moderately thick disks

We show that the propagation of warps in gaseous disks can be strongly affected by compressional effects , when the thickness of the disk is taken into account. The physical reason is that, in realistic self-gravitating disks, the sound time through the disk is comparable with the rotation time; thus the vertical hydrostatic equilibrium cannot be maintained adiabatically as the wave propagates ...

Spiral Galaxies and Tracers of Mass Accretion

Can the present dynamics of spiral galaxies tell us something about the merging history, the formation and evolution of disks? Galaxy interactions thicken or destroy disks; the simultaneous presence of thick and thin disks is a tracer of past accretion, and also of recent disk re-formation. Observation of a large number of counter-rotating disks is also evidence of past mergers, as well as the ...
